Dr Penny Lenihan
BSc(Hons).MSc.DPsych.Couns.CPsychol.AFBPSs.HCPC Registered
Lead Consultant Psychologist and Senior Gender Specialist

Dr Penny Lenihan
I am a senior gender specialist and the Lead Consultant Psychologist/Head of Psychology at Charing Cross GIC within the NHS, where I have worked for 15 years. I have been working with transgender clients for over 20 years privately and within the NHS. I am codirector of Platypus Clinical Services Limited, run a specialist clinical placement training programme within the NHS, deliver professional training courses for organisations and provide professional supervision (group/1:1). I am a British Psychological Society Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow, an HCPC registered Counselling and Practitioner Psychologist, a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), a member of the British Association of Gender Identity Specialists (BAGIS) and I am also included on HM Government Gender Recognition Panel's list of specialists in the field of gender dysphoria. I provide specialist psychological assessments and follow-up sessions including reviews for endorsement of hormone therapy, reviews for endorsement of all types of gender surgeries, psychotherapy, expert court assessment reports and specialist reports for legal gender recognition applications. I also have a specialist interest in autism and am a professional member of the National Autism Society.

I always aim to deliver a personal professional service ensuring clients feel well supported, fully involved and informed, throughout all aspects of their care. If I endorse clients for hormone therapy, then they will be referred for an appointment on site with a skilled experienced medical team, including a prescribing nurse and medical consultant, to review physical health and starting the endocrine treatment. Usually these can be arranged within a few weeks of the appointment with me. Blood tests can be arranged at the medical appointment, but these are ideally done prior to the appointment organised by the client with their GPs. Assuming no medical contraindications, hormone therapy can then be initiated through private prescription or GP prescription, depending on whether the patient's GP is amenable to prescribing at that stage. Some GPs are more comfortable continuing rather than initiating a prescription in relation to private treatment. If there are medical contraindications/complexity, then a referral will be made to Dr Seal. For surgical referrals, a full report will be provided to the client's chosen surgeon. Onsite consultations can also be arranged if required, for most types of gender surgeries.

Professional reports are completed within 2 weeks of the appointment. I provide quite a personal service and am always happy to discuss and address any questions and concerns. As an adult gender specialist, I do not see clients under the age of 18.

I am currently booking in appointments for various dates, depending on availability of slots as some people book quite far ahead and others I might be able to add on to a clinic or slots can be freed up by reservations not being confirmed. I do ask for some further information before finalising the booking in accordance with usual GenderCare practice. Following confirmation of the appointment, I advise what blood tests to arrange with the GP if appropriate, (these can also be found under the GenderCare FAQs) and I ask that copies of ID and any relevant documentation relating to a gender role transition are brought to the consultation.

Please contact me on drlenihan@platypus.uk.net if you would like to discuss arranging an appointment or further details.
