GP and Specialist in Gender and Sexual Medicine
GMC number 4431912

Dr Leighton J Seal
I trained at Oxford University where I acquired a 1st Class Honours Degree in Physiological Sciences in 1994, before qualifying (BM, BCh) in 1997.

I initially pursued a Urology career path, including a spell as a Research Fellow at St George’s Hospital from 2002 to 2004. Alongside clinical work, my research in prostate cancer was published in several publications, and led to the award of the MD postgraduate degree (University of London). During that time, I also worked in a team carrying out research in sexual function.

I then completed specialist training in General Practice, becoming a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners in the 2007 after achieving the highest mark in that sitting of the written examination. I maintained my interest in Sexual Medicine and Men’s Health, and also gained a qualification in Women’s Health through the Diploma of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

In 2016, after extensive training overseen by the European Society of Sexual Medicine, including a dedicated focus on gender dysphoria, I gained the Fellowship of the European Committee of Sexual Medicine.

I now balance three different NHS roles, which reward me with a good breadth of medical experience. Since 2009, I have been a GP Partner at the Beaconsfield Medical Practice in Brighton. From 2015, I have been working in the Urology Department for Brighton & Sussex Universities Hospital NHS Trust. In addition, since 2017 I have worked at the Gender Identity Clinic in London. In this latter role, I specialise in the endocrine (hormone) and general medical aspects of care, working with and being trained by Dr Leighton Seal.

I speak regularly on different aspects of sexual medicine at various events around the country. I sit on the committees of the British Society of Sexual Medicine and the Primary Care Testosterone Advisory Group, and on the Editorial Board of Trends in Urology and Men’s Health. I am a Trustee for the Sexual Advice Association, and Secretary for the Primary Care Urology Society. I am a provisional member of the British Association of Gender Identity Specialists (BAGIS).

* Note: I am currently only seeing new patients after initial assessment by Dr Stuart Lorimer *
